NTDLS.WinFormsHelpers Usage

Extension methods that simplify WinForms value get/set and cross-thread Invoke calls.

NTDLS.WinFormsHelpers

What it is. A collection of helper extensions for WinForms applications: safe cross-thread updates to controls and forms (the Invoke boilerplate removed), getting and setting control values, plus extras like a progress form, text box validation, tool tip helpers and a ListView item comparer.

When to reach for it. You are writing a WinForms app with background work - timers, async downloads, worker threads - and you are tired of wrapping every UI update in if (control.InvokeRequired) control.Invoke(...). Skip it for WPF or modern .NET apps; these helpers are specific to the WinForms control model.

Getting started

The most common win is updating a control from another thread without the invoke dance. These are plain extension methods on Control:

using NTDLS.WinFormsHelpers;

// From a background thread - no InvokeRequired check needed:
myLabel.InvokeSetText("Downloading... 45%");

// Enable/disable a button while long work runs:
mySaveButton.InvokeDisable();

// ...work completes...
mySaveButton.InvokeEnable();

Each helper checks InvokeRequired internally and marshals to the UI thread only when necessary, so the same call works whether or not you are already on the UI thread. The package ships parallel sets of extensions for Form and ListView, so typical patterns like updating a form's title or refreshing list items off the UI thread get the same one-line treatment.
